The Private Lives of Freshmen (Part I)

Given that I cannot seem to find this anywhere else, I thought I'd take a look at the personal characteristics of the recently elected Freshmen Class. I'll take a look at their stated religion, their marital status (noting divorces where I can) and number of children. Most information is taken from Roll Call. Religion and family can be indicative of political attitudes: we'd expect members of Congress identifying themselves as Presbyterian Church in America to be more likely to be pro-life than those merely identifying as Presbyterian, for instance. It gets more obvious when one comes to Atheists versus Catholics, and so forth.

First up, the Democrats:

Terri Sewell AL-7
Single
Christian: AME/Baptist

Karen Bass CA-33
Divorced, One Child (deceased)
Baptist

John Carney DE-AL
Married, Two Children
Roman Catholic

Frederica Wilson FL-17
Widowed, Three Children
Episcopalian

Colleen Hanabusa HI-1
Married
Buddhist

Cedric Richmond LA-2
Single
Baptist

William Keating MA-10
Married, Two Children
Roman Catholic

Hansen Clarke MI-13
Married
Roman Catholic

David Cicilline RI-1
Single (Openly Gay)
Jewish

Interestingly, of the 9 freshmen Democrats, only 4 have children.

Next up: the Republicans
